Finish What You Started

Hi dolls,

once upon a time, a silly girl had the impression to have too much free time and therefor decided to start sewing an English patchwork quilt, eventually to be used as a bed cover. By hand. Some of you might remember that said girl (aka me) actually made it and fisnished the patchwork part of the project. Those who don't, here's a résumé of it.

After that, the unquilted quilt disappeared from my thoughts and into my cupboard. I just had other priorities. At least I managed to make two matching pillows at some point, initially to practice quilting by hand. However, I wasn't satisfied with the result and decided to quilt the actual piece with my sewing machine (after all, I do have a quilting foot for it, when was a better time to use it that for this proect?).

So finally this summer, I took it out again. My semster break lasts 3 months, I knew I wouldn't be travelling anywhere (unfortunately, but you can't have it all), and anything unfinished bothers me. I set myself the goal to finish it by the end of summer, and I succeeded! I'm also very happy with the result:

As I mentioned, it's all quilted by sewing machine. Probably not very historically correct, but I made up my own pattern and colours from the beginning anyways, so who cares.

I wanted to continue the discrepance between the graphic hexagons and the playful, ornamental pattern. Therefore, I sewed along the seams of the hexagons around the pink and darker green pieces, but made round ornaments on the lighter green pieces.

Since I love everything geometrical, I couldn't resist to mirror the quilting pattern so it would be symetrical and look the same on every side, even if that meant more work (and no one's going to notice anyways, but at least I have my peace of mind)

For the back side, I chose this gorgeous rose-patterned fabric. It matches great with the colours on the front side, the print doesn't compete with the patchwork, and it's not too graphic so it doesn't attract too much attention to the fact that I didn't work completely accurate (which is quite hard on such a large piece).

Patchwork Quilt Pillow

Hi prettys,

once upon a time, I had the ambitious plan to hand-sew an English patchwork quilt as a bedcover, completely with matching pillows. I haven't worked on this project for a looong time, but I didn't forget about it.

The main quilt is still lying in my cupboard, not very quilted so far, but I managed to finish the pillows!

I hand-quilted the patchwork on white cotton fabric and then sewed pillow covers with them. For the back, I used a nice rose-themed fabric, I thought it would go well with the front design.

And since I was in the mood for sewing pillow covers anyways (and had to go to Ikea too), I made two more pillows. Deer-themed this time, since I'm currently quite obsessed with deer-like animals.

So my bed is really really cosy now. I love having so many pillows (^.^)

Pillow: Patchwork

as I said, I'll make two pillow covers matching the quilt to practise hand quilting. The (for me) unspectacular part is done, I sewed the patchwork:

I don't know when I'll have time to continue, with december approaching, the exams get closer too, so I'll probably have to cut back on crafting for a while...

Yes, it's done! Well, at least the fist part (*.*)
I'm talking about the never-ending-project called patchwork quilt: I finished the paatcchwork part! Some of you may have followed it from the beginning, either here or on my WIP at N&S.
For everyone else and those who lost track, I thought I'd make a little wrap-up:

It started on the 4.8.2011 with 200 hexagonal paper jigsaws, a small pile of fabric (I underestimated the fabric use greatly, so this pile would grow during the time) and the ambitious intention to hand-sew an English Quilt, following the example of Ette's wonderful one.

I started very motivated. First, I made flowers, the highlights of the quilt:

By October 2011, the center piece, consisting of 7 flowers, was completed:

After that, I moved on to the side parts. Don't they look like flower beds?

From that point on, the quilt became too big to take with me, so I could only work on it at home (before, I took ot witht me on the train or when going to my mum's place etc.). I conected the middle and side parts:

Since it was easier to keep track of the pattern, I tried to work symmetrically. By June 2012, it looked like that:

After that, the thing was too big to be laid out in my room, so I had to photograph it in the living room (^.^). During my summer break, I had more time and motivation again, so by August 2012, I had all the flowers integrated:

And now, as I said, here it is:

For the record:

- 18 different fabrics

- 200 paper jigsaws

- 2 coils of sewing thread and basting thread each

- several needles

- countless hours of film and music

This equals in a monster with measurements 210 x 180 cm, consisting of 1621 hexagones!

Now comes part two: the quilting.

Since handquilting is something I never did before, I thought I'd make two matching pillows first, so I can practise. This is convenient, because the inner side of a pillow cover is not looked at too often and I also can decide over the quilt pattern.

Nearly Done

Hello my lovely readers,

of course, I haven't forgotten about my quilt, although it has been a while since I last wrote about the progress. It's just not that interersting to say, hey look, I added some more hexagones, unfotunately you can't tell the differece (^.^).

But I think this time, there is a progress visible, compared to the last update:

As I said, I made it rectangular again and added a border of light green hexagones. It has now almost the size I was going for. For a nice completion, I think I'll add another row of darker green hexagones all around, because the whole thing will contract a little when I quilt it anyway, so it's probably best to make it big enough.

All The Flowers

As you may have guessed according to the post title, I integrated all the pink flowers in my quilt!

It's so big now, I had to move to the living room to photograph it, but it's still not eays to get the entire thing into the picture. All it needs now is basically a border, which will be made of light green hexagones.

Almost Three Quarters

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing great (^.^)

The title of this post refers to my quilt. I added the latest flower row and now I have almost three quarters of the ultimate size, what's missisng is one last flower row and a framing, which is going to be just simple green hexagones.

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to take a picture of the whole piece, but you can see the most of it and just have to imagine the rest, after all, it's hopefully going to be symetrical in the end.

And just a little close-up of the new part. It's really getting somewhere, isn't it?

Geduldsfaden

Hi everyone,

lately, I found it very hard to go to sleep after learning a lot all day long, my brain wouldn't calm down and thoughts kept swooshing around inside my head (I guess I'd be lousy at Occlumency (^.-) ).
So whenever I'd lie in my bed wide awake, I took out my quilt and worked on it a little, which explains the fact it grows quite fast at the moment.

Hi my dears,

last weekend, while everyone seemed to be at the WGT or somewhere else, ecxept me, I worked on my quilt. Now, it's all in one piece and my room is getting too small:

The width is now about 160 cm long (in the picture it's actually turned by 90°, what appears to be the length here is indeed the width) and I hope to get to 200 cm for the length in the end.
I'm very happy with it, the fact that I'm still in love with the fabric and the pattern is great considering I'm working on it almost a year already. Let's just hope this love will last (^.^)

Half Square

Hi,

during the last days, I worked a bit on my quilt. Maybe you remember the round middle part, which had to become square eventually, since I want my quilt to have four preferably right-angled corners eventually (which may not sound like the bet idea, considering I'm using hexagones, but well, you get what I mean).
So I turned half of the circle into a square:

Next, I'll sew the side part to it.

Heyhey,

how was your weekend?
I spent a lot of time cutting hexagones for my quilt, definitely not my favourite part of the whole patchwork process (>.<)
